Project SupaDunga

Project SupaDunga

Postby Charles » Tue Apr 29, 2014 8:51 pm

I was after something modern and contemporary enough looking to use for work but still with live axles so it can cope with off road work without too much damage.
Something big enough to hang some gear off and fit the family and tow things but still easy enough to drive all day every day.
And something I was comfortable enough with to start modifying
My thoughts seemed limited to a GU or a Disco IIa. But I've driven GUs.
I started looking and found this black 2004 HSE7 with black leather and Active cornering enhancement........and a tv.

Got it home and it looks good on both driveways.

I had ordered front and rear Ashcroft LSDs with axles and cvs when I bought the car.
First mods were to fit them and a UHF.

I bought a mobile tv antenna and a digital tuner to get ABC2 into the back seat.
I had to cut down the antenna so the rear sunroof didn't hit it.
Then I drove it for a little while to make sure it was all happy.
Active cornering opens the sway bar rams off road to improve flex and the dual aircon works really well.
Also picked up a set of the proper wheels for it instead of the 19s it came with and a set of 255/60r18 pirelli scorpions.

Next I started measuring for a motor transplant. It seemed that a LS would fit. So I set about collecting what I needed for that.
I was a bit nervous as to whether the LT230 would cope so i opted for a viscous center landcruiser case with a Marks adapter.
Length from front of motor to back face of the transfer case is as good as identical to the standard drive line.

Wiring.
Pull the factory loom apart and identify all the power feeds to ecu and coils and injectors and sensors etc.
Then get the ecu unlocked so it will run without the BCU and test run it then tie the loom up out of harms way.
The VE commodore ECU locates in the front RHS of the engine bay and looking at the D2 I see a nice spot where the jack goes that will suit it nicely.

Motor out.
I discovered they come out the bottom if you tilt them over a bit.

I sat them beside each other for a comparison.
They are very similar size wise.

Time to drop it in. I had to lift the rear of the car a bit.
It's resting on the rear cross member and a block of wood wedged between the sump and the front axle.

I wanted to run a mechanical fan so that is the front reference point for locating the motor.
I used some left overs from a TD5 water pump to get the thread and made an alloy adapter to bolt it to the water pump pulley.
